In January 2017 I created a nonprofit organization called Blue Line Bears to honor fallen law enforcement officers by making personalized teddy bears out of their uniform shirts to give to their children and families. Although it is hard to choose only one out of the dozens I’ve made bears to honor, there is one special officer whose story left a lasting impression on me. His name is Steven McDonald. He passed away just 10 days after I began my nonprofit, and little did I know at the time how he would change my life. My dad, a police officer himself, knew of Steven McDonald and his story which began many years before I was even born.

23 February 1945 – During the bloody Battle for Iwo Jima, U.S. Marines from the 3rd Platoon, E Company, 2nd Battalion, 28th Regiment, 5th Division take the crest of Mount Suribachi, the island’s highest peak and most strategic position, and raise the U.S. flag.
Thank you all who served including my dad.... ...
